“Other
esters and their salts, including lactones, their halogenated, sulfonated,
nitrated, or nitrosated derivatives”.
Esters
are organic compounds formed by the reaction between an alcohol and a
carboxylic acid. They are commonly used in a variety of industrial
applications, including as solvents, fragrances, and plasticizers.
The
derivatives of esters covered by this code include halogenated, sulfonated,
nitrated, or nitrosated compounds. Halogenated esters are those that have had
one or more of their hydrogen atoms replaced with a halogen atom (such as
chlorine or fluorine). Sulfonated esters are those that have been treated with
a sulfonic acid to produce a sulfonate group. Nitrated and nitrosated esters
are those that have been treated with nitric acid to produce a nitrate or
nitroso group.
